Tummy tuck surgery, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that can help many people who are unable to eliminate bulging muscle and fat around their abdominal area.  The procedure produces extremely satisfactory results as long as the person is right for this surgery.   The best candidates for a tummy tuck are people who have lost a lot of weight or who have been pregnant and have had their abdomen stretched out, are not obese and have fairly good health and generally muscle tone.

The first step towards a successful tummy tuck operation is to have a consultation with your surgeon.  This will include giving the doctor information about your medical history, if you have allergies, are taking any medications or herbs, and have had prior surgeries.  The doctor also examines you and determines the amount of skin and fat you have on your tummy, and assesses the muscle condition as well.  He/she may photograph you for a “before” picture. The doctor will also discuss what you expect to achieve and may go over some before, during and after procedures with you. 
A full abdominoplasty operation can take 2 to 5 hours, and the patient is usually fully anesthetized.  The surgeon makes a lateral incision between the pelvic bones and uses liposuction to remove excess fat, and cuts away the extra skin.  In addition, the surgeon goes under the skin and repositions the stretched out muscles, using sutures to lock them into a new place so that they no longer hang out.   The skin is sewn up and tightened, and the result is a flattened abdomen.  
 
After the surgery, there is a recovery period that lasts about 3 to 4 weeks.  The area will be sore and some swelling is normal.  Patients are required to rest and take off work so that the incision and new muscle placement can heal.  As in any major surgery, there are risks associated.  Bleeding, infection, loss of tissue, sub-cutaneous fluid collection and blood clots are some possible risks to be aware of.  If any unusual symptoms occur during recovery, it is important to contact your doctor right away.
 
In the months following your tummy tuck, you will need to follow instructions from your doctor to ensure proper healing and good results.  Starting at about 4 weeks after surgery, there are special exercises that you must do to strengthen the abdominal muscles while they are healing.  These should be done until about 8 to 9 weeks after the surgery.  Light to moderate exercise is recommended at about 6 to 8 weeks post-op to make sure that you regain and keep your muscle tone.  It may take several months for all the swelling to go down and to achieve the final look.  Some scarring may occur, but the incision points usually become small and unnoticeable in 6 to 9 months.
