Tummy Tuck Costs

The cost of a tummy tuck operation and the associated fees, doctor visits, and medications can vary widely and will depend on several factors.  For example, if you only need a mini-tummy tuck, the cost will be less than if you are getting a full tummy tuck.  Geographic location can also affect the cost.

There are three basic parts abdominoplasty cost: the surgeon, the anesthesiologist and the facility where the operation takes place.  The fee for your surgeon will vary depending on the procedure, how long the operation takes and how qualified the doctor is.   Average surgeon fees are from $3,000 to $8,500.  The fee for the anesthesiologist is typically $500 to $700, and facility fees can range from $700 to $1,000.  Fees related to surgery are based partly on how long the surgery lasts because rates are often billed hourly.

Tummy tuck costs also often include pre- and post-operative consultations and exams, unforeseen minor corrections or treatments, as well as support garments, taking a leave from work, and any other costs associated.

Surgery Duration and Hospital Costs

The procedure often requires many hours in surgery, with overnight hospital stay. The procedures with overnight stays are typically the most expensive.  Also, the more skin and fat that needs to be taken out, the longer the operation will last, which will drive the cost up.  Whereas a mini tummy tuck can be performed in 1-3 hours and the patient usually goes home the same day, a full tummy tuck operation takes about 4-6 hours and patients must stay in the hospital for 2-3 days.  These factors will significantly increase the cost of the full tummy tuck over the mini tummy tuck.

Surgeon Experience and Training Affect Cost

When choosing a surgeon to perform your abdominoplasty, it is important to look at their level of skill and experience.  Your doctor should be certified from the American Board of Plastic Surgery, as board certification requires extensive surgical education and training.  They should also be experienced in abdomioplasty.  These board-certified doctors tend to charge higher fees than other doctors, but due to their rigorous training and qualifications, you will be more likely to receive the best and up-to-date treatment, reduce the risk of complications, and help ensure a successful outcome.

Payment Plans are Available

Because the tummy tuck procedure is an optional cosmetic operation, it is not normally covered by insurance plans.  But most cosmetic surgeons now accept payment plans for people who cannot pay the entire amount at one time.  Ask your physician about these payment plans before you make any decisions.
